The depth of the changes taking place in the area object of the present study is of such importance as to ask questions about the features that this urban space should take in the process of growth of the Capital city. In the perspective of this evolution even more importance is given to what happens in the suburb area, which pertains to and is managed by the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”. The difficulties faced by the local authorities bring to the attention a new need arisen from the interest in finding resources to proceed with and accomplish a project of functional redefinition, which seems hard to be implemented. The 2009 World Aquatics Championships seemed to be a good opportunity, since it was thought that the construction of the sport structures would let to resume the project of urban requalification of the areas of Tor Bella Monaca and Torre Gaia, which are known to be dominated by lack of planning that has its roots in the Fifties of the last century and in which the influence of organized crime is overbearing. A new occasion, always connected with a major event, seemed to emerge to relaunch the possibility of implementing this project. All involved institutions and local authorities seemed to agree that the 2020 Olympic Games could be the right chance to reorganize this territory. In this direction, the size of the planned measures continues to change and, consequently, the disorientation of residents, while an investigation on different scales of the potential and of future possible difficulties seems to be essential.

This paper intends to consider a epochmaking experience for the west European society, caused by the discovery of the New World: the crossing over the borders of the consolidated knowledge and of the domesticated spaces of Mediterranean Europe, and then the projection onto the reconfiguration and the refoundation of a new vision of the world. A new vision that is constructed on this triple dynamism – travelling, discovering, knowing – from then on part of the European historic consciousness and its cultural memory.

The importance of knowledge for the innovation process is widely recognized in the literature. The diffusion of it passes through the use of resources internal and external to the firm. The work focuses on two aspects. On one side it identifies the impact of internal and external resources on the innovation process. The other aim is to find an indicator that captures the combined effect of the two resources with the objective of demonstrating the importance of using these synergies for developing the firm in a given territory. The territory in this case emerges as a key element in the analysis as it is able to provide a complex set of elements: social, cultural and economic, which are able to support the development of enterprises. In some cases, they become determinants by allowing an area of become more competitive than another.

From Botero’s times until now every international system has always developed a geographical
knowledge, used in every nation or empire with different aims. Why? Because the geographical morphologies have been used in different ways through the History. This was the Reclus’ thought, taken from the Nouvelle géographie universelle. In that conviction he was keeping in mind both historical and technological evolution of the world. Geopolitics was born from each part of it, substituting the political geography in the last thirty years.

With the de-territorialization process, it necessary to consider the role that the contemporary city must cover, towards a rediscovery of its traditional link with the country. In this new dimension that the city expresses, it is maturing therefore the awareness to act according to sustainability, for an exploitation and a management of territory. The objective is to analyze the new eco-sustainability projects to individualize the potentialities of local transformation that characterize the context of the Roman area.
