Living with austerity, rebuilding care. Social infrastructures in crisis and practices of self-organization in Antico Corso, Catania. – This paper examines how the dismantling and partial rebuilding of care-related social infrastructures in the Antico Corso neighbourhood of Catania has reshaped everyday life and local power relations. The closure of three historic hospitals—an outcome of prolonged urban austerity—has profoundly altered the neighbourhood’s sense of place. Drawing on a qualitative approach that includes ethnography, interviews, document analysis, and participant observation, the paper shows how institutional narratives present these closures as inevitable and beneficial, legitimizing top-down “urban regeneration” while excluding residents from meaningful decision-making. Many inhabitants respond with a mix of anger and resignation, perceiving the loss of the hospitals as a wound to the neighbourhood’s identity. At the same time, feminist collectives, civic committees, and grassroots organizations are developing alternative narratives and practices of social and territorial care. These initiatives contribute to redefining the neighbourhood from below and contest the spatial consequences of austerity. The paper argues that the crisis of social reproduction manifests not only as an economic issue, but as a spatial and political struggle that generates both new forms of marginalization and innovative practices of resistance and belonging. The case of Catania highlights the specificities and contradictions of austerity urbanism in Southern Italy.

Urban Interstices as Spaces of Possibility. Urban Explorations and Everyday Prac-tices around the SS 554 «Cagliaritana». – In this paper, I explore the hypothesis that the interstices around urban motorways could be intended as spaces of creative, political, and performative experimentation outside planning and market logic. Urban interstices can be thought of as the negative of the city and part of a counter-utilitarian discourse, leading to great flexibility in the production of different urban forms.
Re-interpreting Gibson-Graham’s politics of possibility I re-read urban interstices around motorways as spaces of possibility, in which other spa-tial forms and dynamics are made visible, conceivable, and thus possible. In the literature on interstices, the emphasis on spatial possibilities is pre-sent but never posed in Gibson-Graham’s feminist, performative, and transformative terms.
The reading of urban interstices as spaces of possibility arises from the exploration of the interstices around the SS 554 “Cagliaritana”. In partic-ular, I will provide an understanding of the informal practices taking place in it as non-conflictual political claims towards a different way of producing urban space, that makes the interstices spaces of possibility.

Paesaggi transumanti: a variable geometry approach to interpreting the relational flows of nomadic transhumant pastoralism in Friuli Venezia Giulia Region. – For centuries, a particular type of entrepreneur has been traversing the countryside of Friuli Venezia Giulia, climbing up the valleys and reaching the mountain pastures: they are the nomadic transhumant shepherds. The shepherds do not only make a vertical oscillatory journey that connects the mountains to the plains, but move with perpetual horizontal motion, which sees the herds make daily movements covering an area that affects the green spaces of almost the entire territory of the region, including protected areas, bringing out management and relational conflicts that deserve to be investigated. Despite urbanization, infrastructure and industrialization, transhumant pastoralism continues to exist and stands as an interesting example - complex and full of ambiguity - of resilience and sustaina-bility. “Paesaggi transumanti” is a research project that integrates disciplines of geography, ethnography and contemporary art. The article pre-sents a mapping updated to 2023 of transhumant shepherds in Friuli Ve-nezia Giulia and a proposal for the interpretation of the regional landscape according to their specific point of view.
